We are the South Waikato Music Society located in the centre of New Zealand’s North Island.
Our mission is to make live classical chamber music available to the people of the South Waikato and surrounding areas. We host regular concerts featuring New Zealand and International artists. Most of our concerts are at The Plaza, Putaruru with occasional concerts at other venues in Putaruru.
The South Waikato Music Society started in 1975 when with the assistance of the South Waikato Borough Council we purchased a Blüthner grand piano which has had a variety of homes before The Plaza, Putaruru where it has been since 2010. The Society was originally the Tokoroa Music Society and in the mid 90s was renamed the South Waikato Music Society.
You can become a member of the South Waikato Music Society. Membership costs $15 for individuals or $25 for families. Becoming a member helps us to achieve our mission, stated above, and members enjoy a $5 discount on admission to our concerts.
The South Waikato Music Society is registered as an Incorporated Society under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908 and is also registered as a charitable entity under the Charities Act 2005. As a charitable entity, the Society is exempt from income tax and is given donee organisation status by the Inland Revenue Department. This means that individuals and certain companies can claim a donation rebate for income tax purposes for donations made to the Society.
